Things I tossed from my personal hygeine

I was reminded to day on the CBC radio program The Current by authors of Slow Death by Rubber Duck: How the Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Life Affects our Health off just how hazardous some of our personal hygiene products can be to our personal health and the health of our environment. Though I consider myself to practice good hygiene, my bag of toiletries is comparably compact to many people I know. After listening to the show I felt the urge to purge my bathroom of items that the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database reported to be a high hazard to my health. On the list were:
So that is it, the only real hazard is something I was given for free at an event. Lesson of the day, free isn't necessarily good, as an example would you take free nuclear waste?

Want one.

WiFi Phone

With Toronto being blanketed in WiFi by September, I could just nix the idea of replacing my broken Rogers phone.

Concerts

Since coming to Toronto I've been preoccupied with settling into work and the apartment and I have neglected many of my hobbies. I haven't been going out to shows, which is a stark contrast to when living with Rob and Ilia and getting out to an event or three a week. I've been talking to a few people who have been managing and promoting artisits, and it sounds like a lot of fun. I know it is a lot of work but I could see setting up gigs, promoting events or even managing a band as a hobby.

For now I'll settle for going out to a lot more show. This weekend I've gone on a spree of lining up shows I'm planning to see, to the point where I've set up a google calendar just for shows I plan to, or can resonably consider going to. My plan is that friends can add events to the calendar and meet up more frequently and share and discover good local live music. There are of course major shows on the calendar including Dave Matthews on June 13th (I've got an extra ticket, anyone?), Counting Crows on July 24th with Jay and Tara, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers in Ottawa on September 29th.

Five odd habits

So, I’m it. “You’re what?” – you may be asking. To which the only reply is obviously “it.” Tag is a game that dates back to a time where you could go around hitting anyone, and it was fun. Now when adults hit people they go to jail, so we have to find various other ways of “tagging” people… I was tagged, and being tagged, I am “it.” It is my task to list five of my weirder, mentionable, habbits, and then assign/tag someone else with this task. So here goes my list…
  1. I prefer to dry my hands in my hair or on my pants rather than use communal hand towels, paper towels or air dryers.

  2. I avoid touching doors, door handles, and doorknobs if possible, especially in washrooms.

  3. I contort my face in mirrors, much like Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes.

  4. Ifind it terribly hard to through anything out, from ticket stubs, to notes, to clothes that I may one day have an ocassion to wear in the year 2042.

  5. I sleep with my door open, not out of choice, but so my cat doesn’t tear at the carpets, meow outside my door, or find another way of waking me up so that she may enter.

Since Sean claims to have had such an easy time creating his list, I tag him back – no backsies.

Back to Work Order

Monday will be a productive day. I will be going into work for the first time since being a university graduate. It is a short-term position, but I will be working in the field of computer science, with some pieces of code that may be as old as the Computer Science faculty I studied. Should be a good learning experience, and will keep my mind sharp. It is a three-month contract in Halifax, so I am home until at least February 17th. I hope that by that time I will have landed another job. There is a chance they will extend my contract or hire me fulltime, but I will update you on that when the time comes.
